What to Do Immediately After an Auto Accident

Being in an auto accident is a terrifying experience. That is why the first thing you need to do immediately after an auto accident is collect yourself, calm down and make sure you are not seriously injured.

If you are seriously injured, then remain where you are until help arrives. Even the smallest auto accidents can result in injuries such as:

  • Whiplash
  • Brain damage
  • Broken bones
  • Damage to the spine

That is why you should never move until you are certain that you are able. That is also why you should never move someone who is unconscious. You never know what further damage you might do if you move someone, especially if they cannot tell you if they are in pain or not.

After an accident, attend to yourself first and then ask if anyone else is injured and exchange insurance information. That is all of the contact you should have with the other party. Under no circumstances should you move anything or say anything else until the police arrive. Let the police gather the information that will wind up being the final police report.

Since most smartphones have cameras built into them, it is easier for people to get pictures of the accident scene immediately after it happens. Take a picture of the other vehicle involved and be sure to get the vehicle’s license plate number in case the driver takes off without exchanging information. Get as many pictures as you can to help your case later. Co-operate fully with the police officer on the scene and then ask how you can get a copy of the police report. Some municipalities can print a report out on the spot. Others may ask you to visit the police station.

As soon as you have attended to all of your responsibilities on the scene, your next step needs to be to call a lawyer. The sooner you get a lawyer involved, the fresher the information will be that he or she will have to deal with. If you wait too long to hire a lawyer, then some of the facts in the case could get cold and that could cost you money.

The other reason that you want to get a lawyer involved immediately is so that he or she can talk to the insurance company for you. A personal injury accident victim should never talk to the insurance companies directly because those companies are only concerned with getting the victim to settle for less compensation than the victim deserves. A qualified lawyer will know how to talk to the insurance companies and what steps to take to get you the money you deserve.
