Getting the Facts About Motor Vehicle Accidents in Ontario
Motor vehicle or car accidents remain the most common kind of personal injury accidents in the province of Ontario. The results of a motor vehicle or car accident can force a change in lifestyle that may be difficult to adjust to. Examples of motor vehicle accidents include:
Traumatic Brain Injury
Brain injury is long lasting and, largely, irreversible. The brain is comprised of billions of cells called neurons. Unlike other kinds of cells in the body, neurons are relatively delicate and are not designed to withstand physical trauma. If neurons are stretched or torn, local or diffuse areas of irreversible damage can occur.
When a neuron dies, biological substances are released into surrounding areas of brain tissue which cause a chain of neuronal death. The unfortunate consequence is that in many cases of brain injury, the quantum of damage is hard to ascertain following the initial injury. It is important to understand that unlike other kinds of injuries, the symptoms resulting from a brain injury often become worse over time.
Spinal Cord Injury
Spine trauma is a devastating injury. There are many medical, psychological, and social consequences involved. Moreover, the cost of care and financial expenditures are often overwhelming. What may not be readily apparent is the fact that individuals with spinal injuries often have significantly shortened life spans and require considerable attendant care.
Tort Claims
A tort claim is a claim against the at-fault driver and is usually paid by the insurance company of the at-fault driver. Tort law allows an injured person to obtain compensation from the person who caused the injury. Compensation includes pain and suffering, loss of income and inability to earn income, housekeeping and home maintenance expenses, heath care expenses and claims by family members.
Insurance Disputes
Each year, hundreds of thousands of people purchase automobile, health, life, and home insurance policies in case of unexpected loss and injury. Insurance premiums are diligently paid with the expectation that insurance companies act in good faith when the need arises.
Slips and Falls
Slip and fall accidents are a common type of personal injury accident. Every owner and occupier of property must ensure that people are safe when they enter onto their property. A homeowner must make sure that the driveway and steps leading into their home are in good repair and in the winter, free of ice and snow. Similarly, an owner of a shopping mall or business must make sure that its floors are free of spills and slipping hazards.
