What To Do If You Are Injured On Vacation

When you are living your life in Ontario, you are conscious of protecting yourself and your family. To help make sure that your life is as secure as possible, you buy things such as:

  • Health Insurance
  • Life Insurance
  • Auto Insurance
  • Disability Insurance

But when it comes time to plan your vacation, all of that security you worked so hard to put in place suddenly becomes an afterthought. One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming that the insurance coverage they have at home will apply to situations they experience in a foreign country. For the most part, that is not the case.

If you live in Ontario and decide to go on vacation in Mexico, then you leave all of your Ontario-based security behind. If you experience a personal injury accident in Mexico, you are typically bound by the laws of the region where you are. In most cases, you cannot file a lawsuit in Ontario for an accident that happened in Mexico.

People often think that their auto insurance will cover them wherever they are. If you are involved in an accident while riding a public bus in Mexico, then your auto insurance is not going to help you. It is also possible that your auto insurance will not help you if you get into an accident with a rental car in Mexico as well.

Before you leave the country on your next vacation, there are some steps you can take that will afford you as much coverage as possible while you are in a foreign country.

Get Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can cover things like medical expenses, lost luggage costs and lost or stolen cash for people traveling anywhere in the world. Before buying travel insurance, make sure you are buying from a reputable dealer and that the insurance company is reputable as well. You do not want to get to Mexico and find out that your travel insurance was not legitimate.

Check the Terms of Your Insurance

Some disability and life insurance policies will not pay if you are injured or killed outside of the country. If you go to the cliffs of the Dominican Republic and injure yourself while cliff diving, then your disability insurance may not cover it. Before you leave, discuss what your insurance will and will not cover with your insurance agent.

The only way to make sure you are covered if you are involved in a personal injury accident out of the country is if you plan ahead.

Business travelers should also make sure that their insurance is in order before they travel. Do not assume that your company will be able to offer you assistance if you are injured while traveling on business. Always be sure to make your own arrangements before leaving for a foreign land.
