Do I Really Need A Lawyer for My Personal Injury Accident?

If you have ever been involved in a car accident or any kind of personal injury situation, then you have probably walked away from it thinking that you would never forget the details of an experience like that. If we stay with the car accident scenario, then you may be surprised at exactly how much can start to slip your mind as days since the accident pass.

There are two things every personal injury victim should always remember:

  • Never talk to insurance companies.
  • Always hire a lawyer to take care of your case.

When you hire a lawyer, the first thing he or she will do is interview you to get your take on the accident. Several weeks (or even months) later, when you are still in the investigation phase of a case, you may be surprised at how much you have forgotten. But a trained personal injury lawyer would already have your account of the situation, witness accounts, and all of the police documentation to help back up anything that was said.

When you get interviewed by a personal injury lawyer immediately following an accident, he or she will ask you questions like:

  • Your perception of what happened.
  • If you sustained any injuries.
  • If you noticed any injuries on the other party.
  • Specifics about the accident scene and anything particularly memorable about the accident.
  • What witnesses did the police talk to and what was said between you and the other party involved?

All of that information, and more, is extremely pertinent in a personal injury lawsuit. A good personal injury lawyer will make certain that the facts needed to prove your side of the story are preserved. Even if you have no intention of going to court, that does not mean that the other party did not hire a lawyer of his or her own. When you do not hire a personal injury lawyer, you are leaving yourself open to the legal maneuvers of the other party’s lawyer, and you are also exposing yourself to the insurance companies as well.

If an accident victim tries to deal directly with another accident victim, the insurance company will try to get the other victim to say things that could reduce the settlement. That is why a personal injury victim should always hire a lawyer and allow him or her to speak for the victim to the insurance companies. The lawyer will know exactly what to say and what information to offer to help you get the biggest settlement you are entitled to.

If you find yourself in a personal injury accident, you should hire a lawyer immediately. An experienced lawyer will be able to protect your interests and make sure that your side of the story is properly presented to the insurance companies, and in a court of law.
